This is the first time in 14 years that a third-party M-rated game is ranked #1 on a Nintendo console. The last time this occurred was in February 2005, with the timed exlusive, Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube. Nintendo’s first party exlusives have always taken the top spot when it comes to monthly sales, but the new NPD results for April 2019 suggest otherwise.

Not only is this game ranked #1 as the best selling title of April 2019 on the Switch (physical and digital), in the US, it is also dominating the charts of Playstation 4 and Xbox One for the month of April, 2019. This means that the M-rated game is the best-selling game of April 2019, in the US, across all gaming consoles — a Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo console. The last time this phenomenon occurred is in October 2007, with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. In other words, the first time a game is #1 on each console in the same month in 12 years.

You would also be surprised to learn that this game has had the best digital launch in the history of its franchise, selling 1.8 million digital units across all console platforms and PC in May. And that’s only accounting for the digital purchases; not the physical purchases.

With all these numbers in mind, the top-ranked Mature-rated game on sales charts in the month of April 2019, has also managed to become the 2nd best-selling game of 2019 year-to-date, second only to Kingdom Hearts III.

And the game in question is none other than Mortal Kombat 11. The latest installment in the gory fighter has had a very successful launch, and has managed to earn several amazing and note-worthy achievements. You may even call this a — successality.
