The Switch turns two!

March 5, 2019

I have a confession to make: I forgot the Switch’s second birthday over the weekend. In my defense, I had a horrible bout of food poisoning, and judging by the lack of any “great deals” on the eShop, it appears that Nintendo forgot about it too, well at least about sharing the joy with its fans.

That said, Nintendo has released some great sales figures for the Switch, which through Feb 9, 2019 has sold a whopping 31.15 million units. To put that in perspective, that’s double the sales of the Wii U in less than half the time on the market. Nintendo has also released software sales numbers for the top ten best-selling games on the system (to December 2018), and, as will surprise no one, all those titles are Nintendo first party.   The top ten is as follows:

  1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 15.02 million
  2. Super Mario Odyssey – 13.76 million
  3. Super Smash Bros Ultimate – 12.08 million
  4. The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild – 11.68 million
  5. Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee – 10.00 million
  6. Splatoon 2 – 8.27 million
  7. Super Mario Party – 5.30 million
  8. 1-2 Switch – 2.86 million
  9. Mario Tennis Aces – 2.53 million
  10. Kirby Star Allies – 2.42 million

Not bad on the sales front at the two year point, let’s hope Nintendo plows some of that money back into R & D!
