Nintendo Confirms Switch Online Membership Not Required For Free-To-Play Games

Have you been wondering if free-to-play titles like Fortnite and Paladins will require a Switch Online membership to play?  Nintendo of America’s official website reveals the answer to that very question!

Beginning September 18, 2018, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to participate in co-op and competitive online features for many first- and third-party Nintendo Switch games, including Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Some games, such as Fortnite, can be played online without a Nintendo Switch membership.

So, for those of you who can be satisfied with just playing free-to-play titles I suppose this is good news.  However, in order to get the most out of your games, you will definitely need a Switch Online membership.

Still, one has to wonder if third parties are getting a cut of the Switch Online sales when their title doesn’t fall into the “free-to-play” category.  What do you think?  Let us know in the comments below and be sure to stop by our Community forums for some great conversation!
